Special Investigation Unit

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office is mandated by law to track and register all convicted sex offenders in accordance with applicable state and federal laws under O.C.G.A 42-1-12.  The primary responsibility for the registration, tracking, monitoring, and prosecution of sex offender’s rests with the Special Investigations Unit.

The Special Investigation Unit registers any individual who has been convicted of a criminal offense against a minor or any dangerous sexual offense in the State of Georgia; or who has been convicted under the laws of another state or territory, under the laws of the United States, by providing them with the standardized Sex Offender Registration Form. They are also responsible for providing the registered sex offender with the Georgia Sex Offender Registration Notification Form. The Special Investigations Unit personnel ensures that all offenders are processed, and all documents are placed in the offender’ file.

The unit verifies the home, school, and employment locations to ensure they are following current Georgia law.  The unit will update the sex offender registry and provide the new listing manually or electronically in the sheriff’s office, county administrative buildings, office of the clerk of the superior court, in the main administrative buildings for any municipal corporation, on a website maintained by the sheriff’s office and to all schools or institutions of higher learning located in Barrow County.

The Special Investigations Unit partners and communicates with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to include the US Marshals and GBI  to maintain current data on the location of sexual offenders.
